Hungarian Faith

Created as a small sculpture in 1985; realised as a public sculpture in 1999.

Material: chromium steel on a black granite pedestal. Dimensions: 1.70 × 1 × 1 m.

The work can be seen in the sculpture park of the Modern Museum in Hajdúszoboszló, at 14 Bocskai Street.

As in many of my works, the starting point is the circle. Here, three layers of discs are joined together, incorporating the character from our ancient script that means ‘One’. It forms the most important element of the sculpture’s spiritual message.

The circle signifies the Creator and wholeness. In Hungarian culture, our ancestors revered God in the circle. The circle is the most effective physical and spiritual force.

A double cross rises from within the circle, almost cutting across it. It symbolises God growing from the centre of the circle. Rising from that centre, the double cross connects heaven and earth as a world tree. Following Hermetic thought, its horizontal lines signify the correspondence between macrocosm and microcosm.

In our ancient script, the double cross denotes One: the creative Word. This sign carries within it faith in the Holy Trinity.

I hope this noble thought can have an effect. Although the sculpture is tucked away in the sculpture park in Hajdúszoboszló, it is there to be seen.

This is the foremost faith of our Hungarian identity, which has always formed the foundation of our sacred homeland. As we face the sculpture, the front disc figuratively represents our visible world, while the disc behind it symbolises the invisible world. They are formally equal, yet convey different qualities.
